Rom, Mitte der 1940er Jahre, befreit vom Faschismus, unterdrückt vom Patriarchat. Eine Zeit, deren Rückständigkeit nach Schwarz-Weiß-Bildern verlangt. Delia ist die Frau von Ivano gewalttätigen Mannes fügt und obendrein die Haushaltskasse mit vielen kleinen Hilfsarbeiten als Krankenschwester, Wäscherin oder in einer Schirmmacherei aufbessert, um die Familie in ihrer Kellerwohnung irgendwie über Wasser zu halten. Bis ein mysteriöser Brief eintrifft, der Delia den Mut gibt, alles über den Haufen zu werfen und auf ein besseres Leben zu hoffen, nicht nur für sich selbst.
